Strengen Station
A view of Strengen station on the eastern ramp of the Arlberg Railway. The station lies at an altitude of around 1,000 metres, and the Railjet still has to climb a good 300 metres in altitude to reach the highest point of the line.
I found the time I spent taking photographs on the Arlberg Railway both inspiring and beautiful; the line is certainly one of the most interesting in the Alps.
The route is not easy to photograph (lots of woodland) and, on average, I walked the most kilometres here compared to other railways. I eventually found a good solution for myself: during my trips to Switzerland or Italy, I would always spend a day walking along the railway line, which allowed me to explore many vantage points. The irony was that, towards the end of the Alpine Railways project, I very often found better views that were within easy walking distance, but which I hadn’t discovered before because, once again, I’d often taken cumbersome and unnecessary detours. Like this photograph of the station in Strengen.
