Bietschtal Viaduct
The Bietschtal Bridge spans the gorge of the same name, almost as if floating. Freight trains are now a rare sight on the southern section of the Lötschberg Railway – they usually travel through the tunnel.
I had allowed plenty of time for my hikes along the Lötschberg Railway and split the route over several days. To get these shots, I had to walk quite a lot due to the terrain, but it was more of a back and forth, up and down, than a purposeful march. I had finally found a rather good spot from which to photograph the bridge.
In all the weeks I spent travelling for this book on Alpine railways, I never found a comfortable spot to wait on steep mountain slopes.
So when, whilst waiting for one of the regional trains, a freight train suddenly emerged from the tunnel, I was quite pleased. The image is one of my secret favourites.
