Passo Torri di Fraele
Val Viola, Lombardy
The ruins of two fortress towers on the pass summit covered in mist. The pass is a connection between the province Sondrio and the swiss canton of Grisons (Graubünden). The road is a one way road and was built as a maintenance road for two hydroelectric power plants. The road ends at the reservoir lakes. There is only a path leading over the border to Switzerland. The 17 hairpin bends on the south ramp are very impressive.
By early afternoon I had found this viewpoint, but the light was not really good and I decided to return in the late afternoon. Even then, conditions were not ideal, but the wind suddenly pushed scattered clouds over the ridge and I hoped they would cluster around the two towers. As dusk fell, the clouds gradually shrouded the buildings and the long exposure time produced this wonderful view, which I wouldn’t want to miss for this work.
