Lacets de Montvernier
Maurienne, Graian Alps
The Montvernier hairpin bends are certainly one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the Alps.
From the valley floor of the Arc River, the road winds its way up a moderate gradient over 17 hairpin bends to Montvernier, passing the Chapelle de la Balme and finally leading to the Col de Chaussy.
I was looking for an ideal position from which to photograph the ‘Lacets’. I finally found it after a while, but didn’t necessarily want to take another photo there. The spot is very exposed on a small rocky spur.
The photograph has become one of my favourites and has also found its place in the book Alpenpässe.
I had a print made especially for my studio and always like to remember the moment when the shot was in the can and I was relieved to be able to dismantle the tripod and camera.
