Scala Loop
The railway embankment of the Scala Loop bears witness to the original route prior to the straightening of the Bernina line in 1924 between Ospizio Bernina and Alp Grüm. I find this section of the line very interesting from a photographic point of view, and whilst working on the book Alpenbahnen, I frequently found myself up here, exploring the terrain between the footpaths and the railway embankment.
You can see the train before it enters the Galleria Lunga, which in turn consists of the Scala and Pozzo del Drago tunnels and the Sassal Mason Gallery II – incidentally, the longest on the Bernina Railway line.
