Alley Belle Mine
Avalanches and landslides have torn the former Alley Belle Mine building from its foundations. Only sparse remnants of the former settlement can now be found in the woods, which have grown back since 1926, following the removal of the railway tracks and the decline of the mining town of Hancock.
The railway line once ran along the path on the left.
Around 1880, the mountains around Chalk Creek Canyon were dotted with mines and all the surrounding forests had been cleared. The Denver, South Park & Pacific Railways line still ran across the Rocky Mountains. This meant that ore from the Alley Belle Mine could be loaded onto the train carriages and transported down into the valley for further processing.
