Sustenpass
Canton Bern, Central Switzerland
View of the west ramp and an artificial waterfall. The road over the Susten Pass connects the Meiental valley in the canton of Uri with the Gadmertal valley in the Bernese Oberland.
The current road was built between 1938 and 1945, initially for military reasons, but then as a spacious panorama road, and opened in 1946. From the 1940s until the end of the war, interned Polish soldiers worked here. The road has only a slight gradient of less than 9% and offers fascinating views of the Stein Glacier and the wonderful Alpine landscape.
Next to the road, there are still many sections of the old mule track – the “1811” road – some of which are very well preserved.
I photographed in September, the lighting mood with the many clouds was always a game of patience but also to my taste.
