Great St Bernhard Pass
Pennine Alps
View of the southern ramp of one of the most important alpine crossings, border between Italy and Switzerland and connecting route between the swiss Rhône valley and the italian Aosta valley.
This pass is packed full of history. The pass could tell stories from the neolithic period, the celts, the romans, the famous hospice, the St Bernard dogs to Napoleon Bonaparte and the first modern road in the early 20th century.
I wanted to portray this important pass in a very special way. I photographed a view from evening into the night, an exposure of one hour. You can see the light trails of vehicles along the road, in the motor homes, but you get the impression of an early evening mood. A photograph I was extremely happy with.
